In the summer of 2022, a wave of stories emerged around the working conditions for visual effects artists, and this video essay covers both the key complaints brought forth by artists and the options that industry leaders have proposed for a better future. Of all of the film essays I did with The Royal Ocean Film Society, this is among those that I'm the proudest of. It was a story very much worth telling, an important subject that deserved increased awareness among film fans, and on a more personal level, was a massive step forward for me in terms of motion design as I forced myself to visualize as much of the video through motion graphics as the production schedule would allow, and the result was something I'm still pretty pleased with.
Graciously, this video was included in Sight & Sound's Best Video Essays of 2022 list.
