I grew up with TCM playing constantly in the house - it’s been a real staple and the source that’s introduced me to many of my favorite movies, so it took all of two seconds to respond when they reached out in the summer of 2021 to commission a short documentary to air alongside their fall series on New Wave cinema. The ten-minute piece I wrote and edited for them acts as an introduction that defines and outlines the core ideas found across a handful of mid-20th century movements like the French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, and the Japanese New Wave, with a specific focus on Roberto Rossellinni’s film ROME, OPEN CITY, and Jean-Luc Godard’s BREATHLESS.
